Since the COVID pandemic, there has been a marked increase in people experiencing anxiety related problems worldwide. In March 2023, one study showed 20% of the UK adult population reported experiencing significant levels of anxiety that were impacting on their day to day functioning but these figures are likely to be even higher particularly among young people.
Anxiety is defined as feelings of excessive worry and fear about current or future situations. From time to time, we all experience anxiety in our lives during stressful life events such as illness, moving house, relationship breakups, bereavement and before a driving test or exam. This causes the release of stress hormones in the body and mind and activates our flight or fight response. This is our bodies natural response to danger and its function is to protect us from anything perceived as harmful. For some people, anxiety can be a ‘fleeting’ experience and related to a specific life event or situation but for other people, anxiety can become entrenched in their daily lives. Some levels of anxiety are perfectly normal and can even be helpful in some situations such as protecting you from a dangerous situation such as being faced by a bear.
Anxiety can cause unpleasant physical symptoms such as palpitations, feeling tense, irritable and restless, difficulty concentrating, outbursts of anger, upset stomach and trouble sleeping. Anxiety problems can also increase the risk of depression and other problems like alcohol and drug misuse which tend to exacerbate the problem. High levels of anxiety over time can have a debilitating effect on the quality of your life and overall levels of wellbeing.
Everyone’s experience of anxiety is different. Some people will experience constant worrying or fear about a particular situation such as having a panic attack in a public place or intense fear of leaving their own home. Other people will experience anxiety in a broader range of situations which is known as generalised anxiety disorder.
Common causes of anxiety include stressful life events such as relationship breakdown, housing problems, social isolation, discrimination, difficulties in your job or financial worries. However, anxiety can be related to difficult experiences from our childhood and evidence suggests anxiety tends to run in families so may be related to our genes. Traumatic life events such as witnessing domestic abuse and chronic stress like working long hours can also lead to anxiety. Some medications can cause anxiety and poor diet. There is also some evidence suggesting individuals with certain personality traits may be more prone to anxiety.
Hypnotherapy for anxiety can help you achieve a better quality of life by helping you manage your anxiety more effectively and enabling you to be more in control of your life rather than anxiety controlling you.
• During clinical hypnotherapy sessions, you will learn how the mind works to enable you to live a calmer, happier and healthier life.
• Many people worry about things they are unable to control but during hypnosis, we work with your subconscious mind so it’s possible to quickly move away from the cycle of anxiety through changing your mindset and behaviours.

• BWRT is very effective for disrupting and changing thought patterns and behaviours connected to anxiety and replacing these with new responses that serve you better.
